چکیده

14 Abstract 15 Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is evaluated for paleoclimate field reconstructions in the context 16 of pseudoproxy experiments assembled from the millennial integration (850-1999 C.E.) of the National 17 Center for Atmopsheric Research Climate System Model 1.4. A parsimonious method for selecting 18 the order of the CCA model is presented. Results suggest that the method is capable of resolving 19 approximately 3-18 climatic patterns given the estimated proxy observational network and the amount 20 of observational uncertainty. CCA reconstructions are compared to those derived from the regularized 21 expectation maximization method using ridge regression regularization (RegEM-Ridge). CCA and 22 RegEM-Ridge yield similar skill patterns that are characterized by high correlation regions collocated 23 with dense pseudoproxy sampling areas in North America and Europe. Both methods also produce 24 reconstructions characterized by spatially variable warm biases and variance losses, particularly at high 25 pseudoproxy noise levels. RegEM-Ridge in particular is subject to significantly larger variance losses 26 than CCA, even though the spatial correlation patterns of the two methods are comparable. Results 27 collectively indicate the importance of evaluating the field performance of methods that target spatial 28

A Pseudoproxy Evaluation of the CCA and RegEM Methods for Reconstructing Climate Fields of the Last Millennium*

Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is evaluated for paleoclimate field reconstructions in the context of pseudoproxy experiments assembled from the millennial integration (850–1999 C.E.) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Climate System Model, version 1.4. A parsimonious method for selecting the order of the CCA model is presented. Results suggest that the method is cap...

Evaluating climate field reconstruction techniques using improved emulations of real-world conditions

Pseudoproxy experiments (PPEs) have become an important framework for evaluating paleoclimate reconstruction methods. Most existing PPE studies assume constant proxy availability through time and uniform proxy quality across the pseudoproxy network. Real multiproxy networks are, however, marked by pronounced disparities in proxy quality, and a steep decline in proxy availability back in time, e...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Comments on ‘‘A Surrogate Ensemble Study of Climate Reconstruction Methods: Stochasticity and Robustness’’

In a recent paper, Christiansen et al. compared climate reconstruction methods using surrogate ensembles from a coupled general circulation model and pseudoproxies. Their results using the regularized expectation maximization method with truncated total least squares (RegEM-TTLS) appear inconsistent with previous studies. Results presented here show that the poor performance of RegEM-TTLS in Ch...

CORRESPONDENCE Comments on ‘‘Erroneous Model Field Representations in Multiple Pseudoproxy Studies: Corrections and Implications’’

Smerdon et al. report two errors in the climatemodel grid data used in previous pseudoproxy-based climate reconstruction experiments that do not impact the main conclusions of those works. The errors did not occur in subsequent works and therefore have no impact on the results presented therein. Results presented here for the Climate System Model (CSM) using multiple pseudoproxy noise realizati...

On the origin of the standardization sensitivity in RegEM climate field reconstructions

The regularized expectation maximization (RegEM) method has been used in recent studies to derive climate field reconstructions of Northern Hemisphere temperatures during the last millennium. Original pseudoproxy experiments that tested RegEM [with ridge regression regularization (RegEM-Ridge)] standardized the input data in a way that improved the performance of the reconstruction method, but ...
